From Hand-me-Down to EcoChic: why we love reclaimed fabrics

Your EcoSource loves vintage and reclaimed fabrics. As a kid my favourite thing was to dig into my Mom’s old clothes, the ones we kept in the Hallowe’en box. As a teenager, when some of her vintage threads came back into style, I ventured past the costume closet, and even wore one of her old dresses to my first high-school formal. The beauty of that dress was that it was completely unique. While lots of other girls found their twins that night, I was oh so chic in my one-of-a-kind outfit.
Now that I’m (a bit) older, my favourite hobby is scouring the neighbourhood flea-market on Sundays for new finds. And every
time I go, I realize that I wouldn’t have this hobby if the original owners of the fabrics hadn’t recycled them.
So as you peruse new clothes, I want to remind you to recycle the old ones, which these days is easier than ever. In addition to the in-person options of dropping your clothes and cloths in Salvation army collection boxes, you can also recycle on the web.
Goodwill now has an online auction in a similar (though not as sophisticated) format to Ebay. The difference between Goodwill and Ebay, though, is that the profits all go to Goodwill, so there’s no price-gouging.
But something else I feel passionate about, is keeping goods local as often as possible. This might seem counter-intuitive for a website host, but thanks to Freecycle, it doesn’t have to be. Freecycle is a collection of local forums where members give and receive gifts. With chapters in over 70 countries, from Bahrain to Sweden, you never have to go very far to recycle your goods. Best of all, the only rule for Freecycle is that everything is free, from memberships to goods.
So the next time you clean out your closet, remember, give someone the gift of your vintage EcoFashions, and the next time you plan a shopping trip, make Your EcoSource your first stop.
